A Web Portal for Everyone
Web accessibility refers to the practice of making Web pages accessible to people using a wide range of user agent software and devices, not just standard Web browsers. This is especially important for people with disabilities such as...
- Hearing, vision or mobility Impairment.
- Reading or comprehension problems.
- Not being able to use a standard keyboard or mouse.
- People using text-only browsers, a small screen (PDA-like) or a slow Internet connection.
In order to access the Web, some users require special software or devices in addition to a standard web browser, or specially designed web browsers. Design for accessibility is a sub-category of good design for usability.
In our particular case, our accessibility guides are as follows:
- Follow the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) and the WAI (Web Accessibility Initiative) protocol, at least in its A level, with portions of AA and AAA levels. These guides are now standard and accepted by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortuum).
- Test that all the pages in our portal follow these guides with an online tool supplied by the spanish goverment: TAW (Web Accesibility Test)
Direct Access to main menu and Content
Direct links to page contents and menus have been established so that text-only or screen reader based browsers users can avoid reading all the menus and headers in each page.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Keyboard shortcuts have been also enabled. Here is a guide to follow these shortcuts in different browsers:
- Netscape, Mozilla: ALT + SHIFT + [Shortcut key]
- Internet Explorer 5 o superiores: ALT + [Shortcut key] + ENTER
- Opera: SHIFT + ESC + [Shortcut key]
- MacOS: CONTROL + [Shortcut key]
